Aussie Millions Main Event

Published by Shane Warne

As you may know, The Aussie Millions is Australia’s biggest poker event and after making my first final table just two days earlier I was pumped for a good showing.

I started on a strong feature table upstairs. Unlike the previous tournament, I kept walking into rivers that went against me, which crippled my chip stack early.

The first one was when I was dealt AQ and I raised from early position and got called by the button. The flop came Q 5 2 rainbow and I thought I was in good shape. I bet and he called. The turn was a 9 and I bet again and he called again.

The river brought an 8 and I still thought I was good. I was worried he might have J 10 but thought he wouldn’t have called after the flop if he had it. So, I bet the pot again and he called and turned over 8 5 for 2 pair against my top pair. What sort of Muppet stays in a hand with that rubbish!!

About an hour later against the same muppet I was in late position and looked down at 9 10 . I raised and muppet called from the small blind. The flop came 8 9 10 rainbow. He bet and I called. The turn card was a 2 , he bet and I re-raised and he called.

The river brought an A. he bet and I called to see him turn over JQ, he flopped the nuts and bled me nicely, well played.

Another hour later I looked down at Q’s and thought it was a good chance to improve my chip stack. I raised and got re-raised by another player and my nemises, the muppet, called and so did I.

The flop came AK3, I checked and the re-raiser bet and my nemises re-raised. I had to fold as one of them must have had an A or a K. I didn’t get to find out which left me hoping I wasn’t bluffed off the hand.

At that stage I had about 4K in chips with the blinds at 500/1k, very short stacked. Not long later, the muppet raised my big blind to 3 K and it folded around to me. I had QJ off and thought they were as good a cards as any to push with, so I did and he called. He turned over AK and hit to send me to the rail.

After playing so well and having some luck two days early when I reached my first final table, I was disappointed to constantly walk into better hands when I had something decent, especially seeing it was against the same guy every time!!

I left grumpy and went to spend some time with my family to lick my wounds.
