After a great start in the first test, we were really on a high and feeling confident about our chances going forward. Admittedly we got a little lucky in the game, but it always bodes well to play badly and win, because when we finally hit our A game, there’s going to be no stopping us.
We decided to make one change in the lineup, bringing in our first competition winner Adam Kloens to replace Thommo, who was exhausted from playing every single hand in the first test ! The poms also drafted in Qualifier Steve Falzone to take him on. Me, Marto and Deano were feeling good, and we knew the poms were starting to feel the pressure.
The Luck went our way early when Deano picked up the great K 4 unsuited and decided to go head to head with Falzone’s AK. In a flop made for the man from Coburg, the dealer laid out the K 4 7. Two blanks later, and Deano scooped up a 100,000 pot.
Next Up, my A9 caught up to Falzones Queens on the river for another 40,000, and shortly afterwards Deano’s QJ took out Gladstone Smalls AK. One down, 3 to go.
Adam Kloens took his first scalp shortly after that, with his Aces against Falzones A 10. The money went in on the flop, with Falzone on a flush draw, and 2 blanks later he was history. 2 Down, and the ganging up was about to start.
It was very hard for the English to battle through from there, I almost had Hoggy out with my 77 against his AJ, but he rivered an Ace to stay alive. Min Patel was out next after an unorthodox call from dean Jones with the K3S. He had pushed me off the AQ, but I was glad when I saw 3 spades come straight out on the flop. Patel was history, just like Englands chances in this test.
Hoggard fought bravely, but was eventually sent packing, and me, Marto and Adam Kloens had some fun at the table, trying to win a bit for our charityand get some bragging rights. It was my time though, and my AK stood strong in the last hand to top off a perfect day. Another test for Australia, and another $2,000 for the Shane Warne foundation.
England Heads were down at the bar afterwards. One more for the victory, and only three more for the Sweep !
In the first test we lined up with our Cricketing team. Me, Damien Martyn, Dean Jones and Thomo. We were all a little worried about Thomo, he isn’t really an experienced player, and guile was never his strength.
How wrong we were ! Thommo dominated the table. He was Aggressive, Fearless and most of all, bloody lucky. In his first hand he took out Hoggard’s 6’s and Deano’s AK with his lowly 7 3 offsuit, and his domination continued from there. He sent Hoggard packing with 10 4 vs QQ, knocked me out with KJ vs my A 10, and ended Heads up with Goughie, who he eventually eliminated with the 6 9 vs J 5. He improved a lot through the heat, and you can be sure the poms aren’t going to try and bluff him off a hand in the next test !
With Damien Martyn going out in 3rd, and Goughie in Second we got a total of 4 points, enough to win the test.
The Sweep is on !
Tune into Channel 9 on Wednesday night for the second test!
If you missed last nights episode I have the you tube link here.
I always said that if you had to bet your house on it, Australia would win the Ashes, but you wouldn’t be too surprised if England won. Now the Poms have done it and we have the chance to fight back in the 888 Poker Ashes series.
The Poker Ashes was a 5 test series with ex-Aussie cricketers against the Poms. My team consisted of Damien Martyn, Dean Jones, Jeff Thomson and two 888 online qualifiers Adam Kloens and John Tanner. The Poms captained by Darren Gough included Matthew Hoggard, Min Patel, Gladstone Small, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Rob Key and Peter Such – two UK qualifiers also played.
We played a test each day and there was plenty of trash talking and all round competitiveness from both teams. The Nine Network will air the series from 30th September on Wednesday nights until end of October.
You’ll have to watch the show to see who wins the series, and the urn. For the Poker Ashes, we burnt some poker cards and put them in the urn.
Today is the big poker day for me and I am pumped to play in the WSOP in Vegas. I had an early night which is good prep and I'm about to get picked up to head to the Rio to register and sit down to play.
Yesterday I played in the Ante up for Africa tournament and made it to the final 30 players. Caught up with Jason Alexander, Charles Barkley, Nelly and Matt Damon who was recently in South Africa when I played in the IPL, he wanted to get to a game but he was shooting a movie and couldn't.
On Wednesday night we had our 888 launch party at the Kingpin suite at The Palms - the room had a two lane bowling alley and pool table which was awesome.
I am pumped to make Day 2 of the WSOP. I'll have to fly to London tomorrow for an exhibition cricket match and then will return on Tuesday morning for Day 2 - any offers of a private plane are welcome!
I’ve just arrived in London and it’s almost time to beat the Poms! I’m here for the 888 Poker Ashes which kicks off on Monday in London. It’ll be a 5 test series which will be on Channel 9 later this year.
Three ex Aussie cricketer mates are joining my team including 2005 Test Player of the year Damien Martyn, former great Geoff Thomson, Dean Jones, Australia's most successful batsmen in one day internationals.
The poms will be captained by my long time rival Darren Gough. Rajasthan Royals team mate Dimi Mascarenhas, legendary fast bowler Gladstone Small and English cricketers Rob Key and Minh Patel make up the rest of the Poms poker team.
Local Aussie boys John Tanner from South Australia and truck driver Adam Kloens from Victoria have won a spot on the Aussie team through freerolls at 888poker. They arrived in the UK on Saturday in preparation for Monday’s ‘shuffle up and deal’.
We’ll play two days of the Poker Ashes and after that I’m flying to Las Vegas to captain the 888poker team in the WSOP.
I can’t wait to get the tables – the Poms are getting a flogging!
My two favourite sports are coming together this year with the 888 Poker Ashes. My idea of course.... and what a great way to spend the English summer, playing poker to win the all important Ashes urn. The Poker Ashes is a unique televised Poker tournament where Australian and English Cricketers will face off against each other in 5 Poker Tests to see who can take the money, the pride, and of course, the Ashes urn.
When the Aussies win, the money will be donated to my Foundation, on the off-chance the Pommes win they’ll have to think about a charity to donate to.
Us Aussies don’t like to be beaten by the Pommes – whatever the sport. And I can tell you that the English Poker Ashes team will face a stern test from our boys! We are taking this very seriously – I’m getting the very best I can find including Damien Martyn and Allan Border AND with our team manager Tony G, the Pommes are set for an absolute flogging!
Alongside the cricketers on each team we have reserved one seat for a lucky online qualifier in the UK and Australia, if you win you can expect an all expenses paid trip to the UK in Summer 2009.
Taking your place in the team is easy, just play in the 888 daily Poker Ashes Freeroll from 23rd March, where the top 5 players qualify for the weekly semi-final which will take place on Sundays at 8pm for Aussies and Fridays at 8pm for the Pommes. The top 3 from each week get through to the grand final on 8pm Sunday 7 June where a winner from the UK and Australia will join the teams.
Go to pokerashes.com for more information, get playing and hopefully we’ll be seeing you at the table in the 2009 888 Poker Ashes.
After 2 hours I was knocked out of the Aussie Millions on Tuesday, I have now officially played for the shortest time ever in a poker tournament. It was a great hand almost unbeatable, with an unlucky end. I think I’ll probably play in a tournament on Friday just to get some more table time!
This week has been quite a big one for me, on Monday night 888poker hosted a VIP party at Le Bar in Crown for all the qualifiers who were playing. Jeff Fenech was there as were my poker mates Brenden Fevola, Dave Hughes, Glenn Archer and Jordan Bannister. Fenech came up with a new catch cry on the night ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, 8,8,8’ – it took off well with the crowd and was chanted all night.
On Tuesday before I sat down in the Main Event I had a press conference and wore a sleeve that looked like ink all over my arm, the media thought I had a real tatt but I was just taking the mickey out of Michael Clarke and his new ink job. We announced the Poker Ashes that morning, which will be a poker tournament with 4 English and 4 Aussies players, it’ll take place at the same time the cricket ashes is on. Stay tuned for more info on this one, it’ll be huge....
So now I’ve got a few days off to reflect on my short stint in the Aussie Millions, maybe I should practise a little more online.....fingers crossed for Friday hey.
